Officials in the State have known for almost 12 years that there was a problem with concrete at Seabrook Nuclear Reactor. It's a very serious issue, and it's unlikely to go away. The process was fairly simple and required only a few minutes of work. After the mixture was prepared, it was put into a drum truck and transported to the site. The cement/water ratio increased to 0.43 when the admixture were added.
A prototype slab for a wall was also created. Concrete can be cold and this prototype was actually the first of its kind. Several days after casting, the concrete was still workable, although it might not be the best specimen for long-term durability.
PolarSet (PS), a low-temperature accelerator agent was used to further the experiment. Its primary function is to create a temperature gradient that allows concrete to freeze. The concrete was exposed for seven days to ambient air because the ground had frozen. After five days, concrete's bottom temperature was close to 0degC. This marked improvement is noticeable compared to the previous day.
Despite some drawbacks to the cold-weather application, the DP admixture produced concrete that had the right amount air and slump despite using the wrong chemical mix. Although this was the most impressive of all the tests, pouring concrete into steel forms was the most difficult. The finished product looked much like regular concrete.
Low-temperature additives are expensive. Transporting a pound worth of DP to remote locations is expensive. It's also costly. Fortunately, the admixture has already been commercially made.
