Concrete Contractors from New Hampshire Are Responding to Seabrook's Concrete Problem

service star contractor

For nearly 12 years, state officials have known about a problem with concrete at Seabrook nuclear reactor. This is a serious, but not insurmountable problem that won't go away any time soon. As the imminent threat of decommissioning is real, there is a proactive concrete management strategy in place.

Precast concrete's main advantage is its ease-of-use and resistance to damage during filling. However, the old adage that a precast concrete slab can last as long as the building it's in may prove to be a bit of a myth. Precast concrete doesn't deteriorate in sunlight because it is UV-neutral. It is suitable for green building initiatives due to its many joints.

New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT), carried out an experiment to evaluate the performance of an admixture. The concrete was made stiffer and stronger by adding a small amount of DP. It was very simple and took only a few minutes to complete. Once the mixture was prepared it was pumped into the rotary drum truck, and then sent to the construction site. The water/cement ratio reached 0.43 after the addition of the admixture.

The prototype wall slab was also constructed. Concrete can often be cold so this prototype was not only the first one of its kind. Concrete was still usable several days after casting. However, it may not have been the most durable concrete for long-term durability.

PolarSet (PS), a low-temperature accelerator agent was used to further the experiment. Its primary function is to create a temperature gradient that allows concrete to freeze. Since the ground at the site was frozen, the concrete was exposed to ambient air for seven days. The slab's bottom was at 0°C after five days. This is a significant improvement on the day before.

Despite its limitations, the DP admixture produced concrete with the correct amount of slump and air, even though it was mixed with the wrong chemical. The concrete was also poured into steel forms and set. This made it look a lot like regular concrete.

The biggest drawback of a low-temperature admixture is the cost. It is costly to transport a pound DP to remote sites. Also, it's not a good idea having enough to do small jobs. Fortunately, the admixture has already been commercially made.
